         <p id="par0005">La période autour du passage de 2019 à 2020 sera excitante pour l’équipe éditoriale (et, nous l’espérons, pour les lecteurs) des <italic>Comptes rendus Palevol.</italic> Ce court éditorial vise à communiquer diverses nouvelles récentes et importantes concernant cette revue.</p>
         <p id="par0010">Dans le but de mieux vous servir, nous venons d’accueillir deux nouveaux rédacteurs associés, Juliana Sterli et Hussam Zaher, qui s’occuperont dorénavant des notes concernant les tortues et les lépidosauromorphes, respectivement. Outre la qualité incontestable de leurs travaux (ex., <xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Apesteguía et Zaher, 2006</xref>, <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Sterli, 2010</xref>, <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Sterli et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0100" ref-type="bibr">Sterli et al., 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Zaher et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Zaher et al., 2019</xref>), ces deux nouveaux rédacteurs associés ont été sélectionnés pour augmenter la visibilité de notre revue en Amérique latine, dans des pays où travaillent de nombreux paléontologues. Juliana (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>) est chercheuse titulaire au CONICET (équivalent Argentin du CNRS) au Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF, Trelew, Argentine). Elle est actuellement la vice-présidente de l’Association paléontologique argentine et elle fut la conservatrice de paléontologie des vertébrés (sauf pour les mammifères) au MEF de 2016 à 2018. Hussam (<xref rid="fig0010" ref-type="fig">Fig. 2</xref>) est professeur de zoologie et de paléontologie à l’université de São Paulo (Brésil) et conservateur au Muséum de zoologie de cette université, où il dirige les laboratoires d’herpétologie, de paléontologie et de microtomographie ; il a également été directeur de ce musée entre 2009 et 2013.</p>
         <p id="par0015">Notre stratégie de développement progressif du comité éditorial et de publication rapide (avec un temps de décision visé de six semaines), sans compromettre la qualité des évaluations et des révisions, porte visiblement ses fruits. Depuis plusieurs années, le nombre de pages que nous publions et le facteur d’impact augmentent graduellement. Le facteur d’impact à deux ans le plus récent (pour 2018) est de 1,818, en forte hausse par rapport au précédent (1,433 pour 2017). Notre revue est donc maintenant au 11<sup>e</sup> rang parmi les 57 revues de paléontologie répertoriées par Clarivate Analytics. Elle est légèrement mieux classée (selon ce critère) que d’autres excellentes revues de paléontologie, comme le <italic>Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology</italic> (1,738), <italic>Lethaia</italic> (1,736), <italic>Acta Palaeontologia Polonica</italic> (1,639), le <italic>Journal of Paleontology</italic> (1,584), <italic>Historical Biology</italic> (1,489), et <italic>Palaeontologia Electronica</italic> (1,366), entre autres. Je remercie tous les auteurs (il s’en trouve plusieurs parmi les lecteurs réguliers de cette revue) qui ont contribué à ce succès, et je saisis cette occasion pour vous inviter à considérer notre journal pour vos futurs travaux. Car nous ne pouvons pas prendre ce succès pour acquis ; la compétition dans le monde de l’édition scientifique est forte et le futur de cette belle revue dépend de l’ensemble de la communauté paléontologique.</p>
         <p id="par0020">Notre revue est résolument tournée vers le futur. C’est pourquoi nous nous réjouissons de l’entrée en vigueur prochaine du PhyloCode (<xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Cantino et de Queiroz, 2010</xref>), avec la publication concomitante de la monographie (Phylonyms) qui comportera les premiers noms établis sous ce code, prévus pour le premier semestre de 2020. Le PhyloCode représente l’aboutissement d’environ trois décennies de développements en nomenclature phylogénétique (<xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Cantino, 2000</xref>, <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">de Queiroz et Gauthier, 1990</xref>, <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">de Queiroz et Donoghue, 2011</xref>, <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Keesey, 2007</xref>, <xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Lee, 2005</xref>, <xref rid="bib0080" ref-type="bibr">Pleijel et Rouse, 2003</xref> and <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Sereno, 1999</xref>), une nomenclature s’appuyant sur le fait que les taxons résultent d’une évolution biologique. Au contraire, la nomenclature linnéenne-stricklandienne (<xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Anonymous, 1999</xref>) repose sur des catégories linnéennes (rangs absolus) subjectives (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Ereshefsky, 2002</xref>). La publication de la monographie Phylonyms pourrait donc, si le PhyloCode est à terme adopté par la majorité des systématiciens, être équivalente en importance, pour la nomenclature biologique, à celle du <italic>Species Plantarum</italic> et du <italic>Systema Naturae</italic> de Linné (<xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Linnaeus, 1753</xref> and <xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Linnaeus, 1758</xref>), car ce nouveau code vise à réguler les noms de tous les organismes vivants. Il n’est donc pas surprenant de relever que cette monographie comprendra 285 contributions (P. Cantino, communication personnelle du 13 septembre 2019). Cependant, comme le Phylocode ne régulera que des noms de clades et que beaucoup de concepts d’espèces n’impliquent pas qu’elles forment des clades (<xref rid="bib0075" ref-type="bibr">Lherminier et Solignac, 2005</xref>), ce code ne gèrera pas, du moins pour l’instant, les noms d’espèces. En effet, la catégorie « espèce » est presque aussi subjective que les autres catégories linnéennes (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Ereshefsky, 2002</xref>). La nomenclature phylogénétique (et donc, le PhyloCode) ne requiert pas l’utilisation de ces catégories, contrairement à tous les codes de nomenclature pour taxons qui existent depuis plus de 160 ans (<xref rid="bib0105" ref-type="bibr">Strickland et al., 1842</xref>) ; elle utilise plutôt au moins deux déterminants (analogues aux types) et une définition permettant de délimiter les taxons dans un contexte phylogénétique donné, ce qui améliore la stabilité minimale (<xref rid="bib0050" ref-type="bibr">Laurin, 2005</xref> and <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Laurin, 2008</xref>) et qui comporte de nombreux avantages, notamment pour la paléontologie (<xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Brochu et Sumrall, 2001</xref>).</p>
         <p id="par0025">Bien que nous ne nous attendions pas à ce que l’ensemble des systématiciens adoptent immédiatement ce nouveau code de nomenclature, nous souhaitons rassurer les adeptes de la nomenclature phylogénétique de ce que leurs contributions seront les bienvenues dans les pages de cette revue. Mais que nos autres contributeurs réguliers se rassurent ; ils ne seront pas non plus obligés d’adopter ce nouveau code pour continuer à publier dans les <italic>C. R. Palevol</italic> !</p>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0010">
         <title id="sect0020">English version</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0030">The 2019/2020 transition will be exciting for the editorial staff (and, we hope, for the readers) of the <italic>Comptes rendus Palevol</italic>. This short editorial presents various recent developments concerning this journal.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0035">To better serve you, we welcome two new associate editors, Juliana Sterli and Hussam Zaher, who will handle papers on turtles and lepidosauromorphs, respectively. In addition to the superb quality of their work (e.g., <xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Apesteguía et Zaher, 2006</xref>, <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Sterli, 2010</xref>, <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Sterli et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0100" ref-type="bibr">Sterli et al., 2018</xref>, <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Zaher et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Zaher et al., 2019</xref>), they have been selected to enhance the visibility of our journal in two Latin American countries where many colleagues work. Juliana (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>) is a tenured researcher in the Argentinean Council of Research (CONICET) and works at the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF, Trelew, Argentina). Currently, she is the vice-president of the Argentinean Paleontological Association, and she was the curator of vertebrate paleontology (non-mammals) at MEF from 2016 to 2018. Hussam (<xref rid="fig0010" ref-type="fig">Fig. 2</xref>) is professor of zoology at the São Paulo University (Brazil) and Curator at the Museum of Zoology of the same university. Hussam is also director of the laboratories of herpetology, paleontology and X-ray microtomography, and was director of the museum from 2009 to 2013.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0040">Our strategy of gradual development of our editorial committee and of rapid publication (aiming at a decision time of six weeks) without compromising the quality of the review and revision process is obviously yielding good results. For the last several years, the numbers of published pages and the impact factor (IF) have been increasing. The most recently-available two-year IF is 1.818 (for 2018), showing a strong increase from that of 2017 (1.433). Our journal now ranks 11th among the 57 paleontological journals surveyed by Clarivate Analytics. According to this criterion (IF for 2018), it ranks slightly above other excellent paleontological journals, such as the <italic>Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology</italic> (1.738), <italic>Lethaia</italic> (1.736), <italic>Acta Palaeontologia Polonica</italic> (1.639), the <italic>Journal of Paleontology</italic> (1.584), <italic>Historical Biology</italic> (1.489), and <italic>Palaeontologia Electronica</italic> (1.366), among others. I thank all the authors (there are several among the regular readers of this journal) for their contribution to this success, and I take this opportunity to invite you to consider the journal for your future works. We cannot take this success for granted; the world of scientific publishing is highly competitive, and the future of the journal depends on the whole paleontological community.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0045">Our journal welcomes new developments, and we look forward to the forthcoming (in the first semester of 2020) official implementation of the <italic>PhyloCode</italic> (<xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Cantino and de Queiroz, 2010</xref>) and the simultaneous publication of a monograph (<italic>Phylonyms</italic>), which will include the first names established under that code. The <italic>PhyloCode</italic> represents the crown achievement of three decades of development of phylogenetic nomenclature (<xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Cantino, 2000</xref>, <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">de Queiroz et Gauthier, 1990</xref>, <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">de Queiroz et Donoghue, 2011</xref>, <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Keesey, 2007</xref>, <xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Lee, 2005</xref>, <xref rid="bib0080" ref-type="bibr">Pleijel et Rouse, 2003</xref> and <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Sereno, 1999</xref>), and it is based on the fact that taxa originated through biological evolution. By contrast, the rank-based nomenclature relies on Linnaean categories (absolute ranks), which are artificial constructs (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Ereshefsky, 2002</xref>). The publication of <italic>Phylonyms</italic> could thus, if the <italic>PhyloCode</italic> is eventually adopted by most systematists, be as important as the publication of <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Linnaeus, 1753</xref> and <xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Linnaeus, 1758</xref>
               <italic>Species Plantarum</italic> and <italic>Systema Naturae</italic>, because the <italic>PhyloCode</italic> intends to regulate the names of all living organisms. It is thus not surprising that <italic>Phylonyms</italic> will include 285 contributions (P. Cantino, personal communication from September 13, 2019). However, given that the <italic>PhyloCode</italic> will regulate only clade names and that many species concepts do not imply monophyly (<xref rid="bib0075" ref-type="bibr">Lherminier and Solignac, 2005</xref>), this code will not regulate, at least in the near future, species names. Indeed, the species category is almost as subjective as the other Linnaean categories (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Ereshefsky, 2002</xref>). Phylogenetic nomenclature (hence the <italic>PhyloCode</italic>) does not require Linnaean categories, contrary to all the rank-based codes that have existed for the last 160 years (<xref rid="bib0105" ref-type="bibr">Strickland et al., 1842</xref>). Instead, it uses at least two specifiers (analogous to types) and a definition that delimits taxa in a given phylogenetic context, and this enhances minimal nomenclatural stability (<xref rid="bib0050" ref-type="bibr">Laurin, 2005</xref> and <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Laurin, 2008</xref>) and has numerous advantages, notably in paleontology (<xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Brochu and Sumrall, 2001</xref>).</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0050">Although we do not expect that all systematists will immediately adopt this new code of nomenclature, I wish to assure proponents of phylogenetic nomenclature that their contributions will be welcome in the pages of this journal. But our regular contributors can rest assured that they are not obliged to adopt this new code in order to continue publishing in the <italic>C. R. Palevol</italic>!</p>
